Ooh, you busted, Bloggkkx. Steppin' out on Mecha-Smiles. For shame!

Late this week for no other reason than that I forgot there was a completed, colored page in my inbox... My B, ya'll.

Wish me luck as we Floridians brace our butts for a vigorous paddlin' from Hurricane Irma.

How heavy is twnty mulm? :O

I knew Bloggkkx is going to get it! Serves him right! Should have kept his mouth shut and actually done something productive. His sub seems sturdy though.
He kinda reminds me of Dr. Cortex, haha. Really. I can see him getting good with Jeff after this... for like 5 minutes before betraying him :D

Heh. You kinda hit the mark with these pages and the storm. If this were Pokemon, they would ban the page because of the hurricane.

A mulm to a smilan must be something like a few hundred pounds to a human, though smilans to scale are much smaller than humans (maybe less than the size of a finger from the tip to the first knuckle), so a twenty-mulm boulder on earth might be a golf ball or thereabouts.

Interesting that Bloggkkx actually feels he has to explain having other rivalries to Jeff! I'll admit Google had to refresh my memory on who Dr. Cortex was X)

Luckily for these guys, and unluckily for us real people, their storm is much smaller than ours!

Wait whaaaaat?? Smilans are THAT small? Do I get that right??
Wow! So everything else on their planet is also very small to our eyes or invisible! Now I am not sure about the size of the planet...

If they have a mission on Earth then everything has to be super huge!
Smilocide 14th Sep 2017, 12:29 PM edit delete reply
Yup, smilans are teeny-tiny. Their planet is roughly 2/3 the size of earth but has a similar mass because it has a larger concentration of iron and other metals at its core. The smilan settlement on earth happens to be on a very small atoll in the middle of the ocean, so they're not likely to actually run across any humans there, though Mauve Team expressly set out from the settlement for the mainland - North America.

Gosh :O
That changes a lot, haha. Good to know!
So how do they steal all the Earth tech then??
Smilocide 18th Sep 2017, 3:47 PM edit delete reply
Phew! You asked, so here it comes: Sometime, if memory serves, in the late seventeenth century, a bluger (sessile sentient species closely related to the bugers that are Mecha-Smiles' mechanics) was trapped under a landslide. Blugers don't have a finite lifespan and the bluger was able to survive on runoff water in total darkness for several hundred years. While buried this way, it developed its mind and learned the art of astral projection and eventually was able to observe earth. When this bluger was excavated in the late 19th century, it shared what it had learned of earth; this was the first exposure to smilan culture of the earth. In the early 20th century, earth became an active emitter of radio signals, which the smilans picked up on (Supirion is roughly 8ly from earth, so the transmissions are eight years old when they arrive). By monitoring these transmission, the smilans were able to absorb a tremendous amount of information about earth culture. This is alluded to in a few places in MS when they mention the Earth Radio Co. While most smilans around the time this is set (chapter 4 is circa 1993) are only just beginning to be able to afford televisions in their homes, and little is available to watch on them, earth programs are often screened at Smilan theaters. Often among educated smilans, English is taught as well (Mauve Team is fluent in English and will need to use it on their mission). Though they've never met an earthling, earth culture is always in vogue. Additionally, on Evlion, a moon of Supirion inhabited by the egs, enemies of the smilans, a teleportation device was developed by unnatural means and set in orbit. Though the smilans don't understand the technology, they have seized the device and used it to set up a small colony on earth at the site where the companion teleportation device crashed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Guh, my brain is too tired and overheated right now to say more but thanks for the explanation!
Also, I did not word it properly but I was asking about the process as well. They learned about the tech but how did they copy it? Since they are so small and different material there.
Smilocide 21st Sep 2017, 8:29 PM edit delete reply
Good point, and one, as it happens, that is still pretty uncertain. The smilans primarily make use of a substance they call smilonite for a variety of purpose. It's a soft, super-tough polymer that is naturally found abundantly on Supirion. In fact, it's one of the main components of the splain falling right now. The stuff that essentially is smilonite is also the medium for a sort of organism on earth that comprises most of Toxic Tampa Bay in The Chanterelle and May Life. It's also just my convenient plot device to address issues like that.
MadJak91 22nd Sep 2017, 3:12 PM edit delete reply

So I am guessing the bluger who crashed on Earth, crashed near the place where May Life takes place in our future? Only saying this because you said that is the place where Smilonite occurs on Earth.
Also, this makes the Smilans pretty... clever. Although I guess most civilizations needed geniuses to progress so maybe only those. Saying this because you always say how dumb Smilans are but copying tech like that is well... advanced as heck :D

Pff! The Force is a plot device and so are the crystals in Dune. Hush!
Smilocide 22nd Sep 2017, 8:20 PM edit delete reply
The Bluger didn't physically go to earth. He went psychically, you might say. The "stuff" is used very differently on earth. It's place in May's life is what happens when it goes wrong!

As to the tech, the smilans didn't have a whole lot to do with figuring it out - it was mostly the bugers. They really enjoy making things, and since they're not mobile, they almost regard it as a favor when the smilans give them stuff to work on.

It's actually pretty hilarious that Bloggkkx has to explain having other rivalries to Jeff, if you think about it.
AND feels like he has to qualify it with "I'll always hate you the most…"

And, damn, your font is nice! I'm going to start to use it in absolutely everything I do, forever. You're going to hate me… or sue me.

SO glad you made it through the hurricane!
Smilocide 19th Sep 2017, 8:19 PM edit delete reply
Ha yes, it's a complicated relationship...

I'm glad you like the font! Use it in good health!

Yes, we lost a fence and wifi, but were pretty lucky when you get down to it!
