Nega-Smiles is at it again, but he's got more than just Mecha-Smiles to contend with this time. Hey, look! It's Gourd Girl!

Wow! Panel five is brutal. If this were Gundam, they would probably be already dead there. But then they would switch to melee weapons. Still, nothing like unloading your guns at point blank range :O

Which reminds me... Is MS made out of Smilonite or something similar? It quite withstand quite the beating and jumping from battle to battle with little time for proper maintenance!
Same with the glass like cockpit. Interesting how the enemy usually does not aim for it. It is probably sturdy and a much smaller target than the main body.

Dr. Smetmef gives no benefits to his employees :D
Heh. Makes me wonder... Do you know if psychologists come home and are like: "Man... I had this patient today and..."
It is their job to listen and talk but they are still humans. Actually makes me think how many of them and how often they think the person is a complete fool or their problem insignificant....
If some teachers and caretakers can be like that then probably psychologists as well.

MS likely contains some kind of smilonite alloy, but he does get maimed often, too! Or just ceases to function (in fact, I think cpt. 4 was the first time MS didn't jsut break in battle!). The dome has smashed on occasion, but it's a small part of the mech, and smilans are bad shots, I guess.

Ha and I'm here to tell you hat some teachers can indeed be like that... I'm afraid it's probably just a human thing...

Unorthodox question so if you do not have anything then no shame!

I am curious about MS' parameters for a few reasons since we are on the topic of mecha fights.

What if I manually run something like:
msdiag -p -s | CombatParams
Simply ask it: "List your combat parameters and run diagnostics of your primary and secondary systems."

Er... I mean, what are its specs? :D
Weapons, speeds, durability, and so on. What you can think of.
I would like to add to my list of mechas and how it would fare against them.
Now, I know you have real robots (for example Gundam series) and super robots (for example Ideon). I would say MS is somewhere in between BUT like an older model.

Assuming appropriate scale. It is something I often overlook, haha! I guess if you take an adult pilot and their mecha is as big as an apartment building then... if Jeff is like the plushie then in our world MS will be about the size of a tall human? Does that sound right?

Meaning, I know its weapons and specs go hand in hand with its size on Supirion but that is fine. I will do necessary approximations :D
Smilocide 27th Feb 2018, 3:32 PM edit delete reply
Ha that's funny! You've put a lot of thought into this! To scale, MS is still probably only about as tall as a man's hand in length! He can rapidly fire incendiary rounds from the guns in his gauntlets where he also has a (largely impractical) laser; RPGs and another pair of guns in his chest; a small cache of missiles he can fire from his hands; and a few more exotic weapons, like electrified plating and expanding foam sealant gun. His specs tend to change, too, because often several years elapse between chapters, MS gets smashed up and rebuilt, or technology improves. Some of his weapons were actually adapted from Nega-Smiles after MS's first encounter with him. Also, interest and funding for the Mecha-Smiles Project has wavered throughout the years, so some weapons that require heavy maintenance are removed to be shelved or just retired.
MadJak91 28th Feb 2018, 1:19 PM edit delete reply
Wow! Then the Smilans are even SMALLER! Good to know :D

Thanks! Interesting to hear that it has no close range weapons. I guess it punches things usually anyway or the smaller ranged weapons suffice like on this page.

This also confirms what I suspected. Its load-out is not exactly "super" so his combat capabilities largely depend on its pilot. Jeff in this case. However, the AI plays no small role in its behavior so I guess MS still fits somewhere between real robots and super robots. Sure, it is not exactly over powered city+ destroyer class mecha but the AI is nothing to underestimate even with a very skilled pilot :D
Smilocide 28th Feb 2018, 7:29 PM edit delete reply
Right! The dexterity its design allows for is really what gives MS its edge - flying, weaving through buildings, and basically outpacing any other vehicles the smilans currently have. That, and of course, its pilot and AI. There's a lot to the AI's backstory, which we touch on a tiny bit in this chapter.

Thank you!
And that is exactly the reason why I said the generals can be only glad Jeff is so OKAY with everything. The MS can potentially rival any other tech they have. One problem would be maintenance because I am not sure who other than his military stations can repair its damages and restock it but eh, you never know what freelancing engineer is out there with comparable skill if Jeff goes rogue :D

One other important question about scale.
I think we agreed Supirion is about the size of Venus (quickly based on properties of its physics). I never asked but if Smilans are so damn tiny then it is clear objects like trees and rocks and creatures and everything are also super tiny. Even mountains. Since they are scaled properly in the story.

Is it possible we only like see the microscopic part of the planet then? If someone else would visit it (like humans) would they find an empty planet from their point of view?

Does the question make sense? :D
Smilocide 2nd Mar 2018, 9:44 AM edit delete reply
Supirion is probably smaller than Venus, maybe more the size of Mercury. What it lacks in volume, it makes up for in mass with a greater concentration of heavier elements at its core.

Even so, the smilans are smaller relative to their planet than humans are to theirs. I assume, however, (and could be totally wrong) that creatures and even geographic features largely evolve to their scale as a consequence of A) the effects of gravity on them, and B), in the case of living things, the demands of their environment. The other cheat that makes this work is that their is proportionately more water on Supirion, and its oceans' trenches are deeper, hence the mountains more or less to scale.

Much of this was thought out well in advance, but I'll be honest, a lot of the structure of their world is a consequence of our conversations, so thanks for keeping me on my toes!
MadJak91 2nd Mar 2018, 2:55 PM edit delete reply
Mercury then! Gotcha! Its properties should work.

C) It is an alien planet out there so why not? :D
Some would argue but I find that a legit explanation as well.

I would say creatures evolve based on necessity, practicality and competition. Animals like Dinosaurs or Megalodon sharks died out because they could not catch food anymore and the climate changed as well. The small weak predators were simply the better hunters and did not require as much food to sustain themselves. And could hide better (land or air) so the big animals died out as not very optimal. Judged as such by the nature. Evolution to achieve a more efficient form.

We can say evolution happened with that in mind but in a way that Supirion needed. Why not? So I can agree with your cheats :D

And no problem. Always good to discuss more scientific topics. Does not happen often OR the topic is magic and magic often has arbitrary rules :D

Thanks a lot for this :D

YES! So happy it made it without TOOOOO much trouble!

Bro started reading it sooner than me actually... LMAO
So I have to wait a bit :D
I am actually surprised. I guess he saw something cool looking when I showed him and figured why not. We used to both read Ducktales and such as kids so maybe a hint of nostalgia :D

This is actually the biggest oversight ;)

Ha! Where is Nega-Smiles off to?
Maybe Gourd Girl is far more intimidating than she seems?
Happy to have her back regardless.

Since the Smilans are so tiny, is their population actually larger than that of the humans on Earth, or is there far less land mass?
Smilocide 16th Mar 2018, 10:56 AM edit delete reply
Yes! We'll be seeing lots more of her soon.

I imagine there are probably fewer smilans because there are lots of undeveloped lands on Supirion. They tend to congregate in certain areas. Probably because the wild lands are full of horrible monsters.
